Energize Denver: which rules apply to your building?
Start with gross floor area, then separate reporting from energy-performance requirements.
Check your building →5,000–24,999 sq ft
Small buildings follow the lighting, renewable-energy or approved alternate-compliance pathways. The current size-band deadlines are December 31: 20,000–24,999 sq ft in 2026; 15,000–19,999 in 2027; 10,000–14,999 in 2028; and 5,000–9,999 in 2029. Use the city’s small-building lookup to confirm the record and any approved adjustments.
25,000 sq ft and larger
Annual benchmarking and building-specific performance targets are separate obligations. Use the official Denver Building ID to check published EUI targets, verification requirements, exemptions and approved timelines. A reporting status alone does not prove that a future performance target is met.
Denver and the state
Buildings 50,000 sq ft and larger can have both Denver and Building Performance Colorado obligations. Deemed compliance for performance targets does not eliminate separate annual state reporting or fees.
Plan the improvements and funding together
An ASHRAE Level 2 audit can identify measures needed to meet a target. Denver’s audit rebate schedule is $5,000 for 25,000–50,000 sq ft and $2,500 plus $0.05/sq ft above that size, capped at $30,000. Eligibility, available funds and preapproval by December 15, 2026 apply.
