What’s in a theme you may ask? The journey towards the creative development of the World Energy Day (WED)2020 theme to took on an interesting turn with respondents proposing areas of focus to drive both the conference an extra conference activities held in the run up to the October WED implementation.

A series of themes were proposed with participants sharing the direction they felt Africa should go, the conversations that need to be had and the areas in which impact must be felt. The themes below were forwarded from different members.

### **Theme proposals**

1. The Future of Energy in Africa: Innovation |Efficiency|Interoperability
2. Energy Sustainability in Africa: Taking charge of Energy Change
3. Energy Change in Africa: Renewing the Focus
4. Energy Innovation for a sustainable future
5. Renewable Energy in Africa: Sustainable Development for a Green Future.
6. Green Energy in Africa; Renewable-Powered Future and its Share in the Energy Mix.
7. Renewable Energy in Africa; Unbundling the Power Mix to a Green Future
8. The March Towards A Green Future In Africa: Tapping Into The Renewables
9. Bringing Africa’s Energy Future Forward – Innovating for Energy Change
10. Africa’s Energy Revolution  – Energy Ideas into Action

Once the ten themes were submitted, they were subjected to a poll with members being requested to select their first, second and third choices and to indicate the reasons why they had settled on those specific choices.

### **Results**

#### **First Choice**

There was an equal distribution of the first choice amongst three themes at 22.2% each:

- _The Future of Energy in Africa: Innovation |Efficiency |Interoperability_
- _Energy Sustainability in Africa: Taking charge of Energy Change_
- _Green Energy in Africa; Renewable-Powered Future and its Share in the Energy Mix_

#### **Second Choice**

![](data:image/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==)

The second choice recorded the highest entries at 55.6% for the theme:

- _The March Towards A Green Future In Africa: Tapping Into The Renewables_

33.3% for the theme

- _The Future of Energy in Africa: Innovation |Efficiency |Interoperability_

11.1% for the theme

- _Energy Sustainability in Africa: Taking charge of Energy Change_

#### **Third Choice**

![](data:image/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==)

The third choice recorded 44.4% for the theme

- _Energy Innovation for a sustainable future_

22.2% for the theme

- _The Future of Energy in Africa: Innovation |Efficiency |Interoperability_

And 11.1% for all the rest.

### **Reasons for choices**

Respondents provided various interesting reasons for their choices of the themes with the main focus being on the need for Africa to take a keener interest in Energy matters and to have a holistic approach to both energy efficiency and clean energy initiatives. Reasons provided?

- _The themes on the list sound supper innovative we need to run with the innovation focus_
- _They are very futuristic looking which is visionary – Africa needs visionary energy initiatives_
- _The focus is on renewable energy which to me, is the future of energy in Africa_
- _It relates to “self” meaning it has to start with me – energy matters need to start with me_
- _My take is the theme should have energy and innovation. Most stakeholders are attracted to innovations like solar thermal technologies. The student challenge should be anchored on energy innovation_
- _Green energy is the way to go. Take an example of solar power. It is highly harnessed in countries (Germany, China, Norway etc) with far less sunshine cover, yet our continent lies on the equator. This is a major wake up call for Mama Africa. Africa is a goldmine of resources, it is time to awaken the sleeping lion._
- _The themes have focused on the broader picture of renewable energy, the future and interoperability._
- _Innovation for 2020. We must innovate and progress in that direction_
- _A broad theme is required to cover innovation, green energy and the future_

### **Final Results**

And finally – after computing the most popular theme from the range of first second and third choices that the respondents, we have a winning theme that will be the back bone and driver of the WED 2020 activities and outcomes

**And the Winnner is………..!**

**The Future of Energy in Africa: Innovation |Efficiency|Interoperability**
